Good To Know
|from Joan, our Gatlinburg Market Manager|
We got a Groupon and assumed everything was good to go. Got up New Years Day and made the 5 hour drive up to Gatlinburg and arrived for check in at 4:30 (check in is at 4). We ignored the reviews because it was inexpensive and you do get what you pay for to a certain extent. We were pleasantly surprised... at first... because while the place is old it is kept up nicely so we were actually excited and happy with our decision until it was our turn to check in. They had no record of our reservation until he searched through the emails and found it. Our reservation had not been integrated into the system. We were told there were no rooms for us but we could drive to Pigeon Forge and find a place by using Expedia. I work in hospitality and I found this unacceptable. We did have 2 friends, a married couple, that had purchased the same Groupon and they were able to check in. We asked if we could get 2 roll aways into that room so we'd have a place to stay and he told us no due to fire codes but he could put a blow up single mattress in there for us. I'm 5'9 and my boyfriend is 6'0... this was impossible. We went back down to the front desk to suggest some options for us and all were met with "That's impossible and they just won't allow us to do that". We left again and eventually came up with more solutions for the attendant and we finally arrived to the fact that there was availability the 2nd night of our stay. Why this wasn't originally offered to us to begin with? I'm really unsure except for lack of training. We got set up with that and we were told that we could contact Groupon to request a refund and they would authorize it. We left for dinner. During dinner we receive a phone call from the attendant and he said someone cancelled and they have a room for us. We were relieved! Once we checked in we were still assured that we would receive a refund due to the experience. The customer service was decent but would benefit from some training. He was left completely alone on what seemed to be a very very busy day. We get to our room and it's pool side. It smelled overwhelmingly of chlorine and Axe Body Spray. I would wake up in the middle of the night due to the heavy odor. The pool was shut down at 10 or 11 and it wasn't loud at all. The waterfall sound was actually kind of nice. Other than the hiccups in the beginning and the odor of the room, we had a nice trip. Gatlinburg is a very nice city and we had a lot of fun. We just stayed out of the room as much as possible. At this point, they agreed to refund us the amount so we just made the best of it. The following week after the trip was over we received an email from Groupon denying our refund because the hotel said we had arrived late to check in and that's why we weren't given a room and that was a complete lie. I had even asked them if there was a policy where we could receive a room because someone lost it after a specific time due to arriving late and they told me there was no such thing so we couldn't stay there. The price is too good to be true. I suggest paying a bit more and going down the street to the Microtel or Motel 8 because those looked pretty nice.
If by chance you leave any of your belongings behind, kiss them goodbye! Don't expect professionalism or concern from management or front desk staff. Kudos to housekeeping who found my bag, spoke with me personally and turned it in, from there...sticky hands!
Stayed at the Glenstone over Christmas holidays. Large rooms with updated bedding. Beds very comfortable. Bathroom/shower small but adequate. Nice sink area with large mirror that allows more than one person to apply make-up, etc. Pool area could use some updating and brighter colors, but pool and hottub were divine. Water temp perfect. Great place for families with children who love to swim. Dining area for breakfast outstanding and you can order omelets, fresh juice and other items not on the breakfast bar, a real plus. Entire staff eager to please.
Overall, we were pleased with this property. It's conveniently located with easy access to the trolley line. My grand daughter loved the indoor pool, and we had poolside rooms with easy access. On the downside, the rooms are in need of updating. Our toilet was leaky and when we stood in the tub it felt like we were going to fall through to the room below us. Also, mattresses were not that comfortable and bedding needs to be replaced. We prefer white linens and duvets and not the thin blankets and floral bedspreads in this property. This hotel is a fair value for the location. Restaurant is open on weekends for buffet breakfast.
